These are the remnants of the Lighthouse of Alexandria. They may not look like much, but these columns were part of a structure so impressive that the ancient Romans included it among what they called the Seven Wonders of the World.
To give you some perspective, this sort of “dream team” of great works also featured the Great Pyramid of Giza, the only Wonder still standing today.
The Lighthouse of Alexandria was erected around 280 BC and stood for a long time, until roughly a millennium later, when it sustained irreparable damage during the 1303 Crete earthquake.
